A tale of two New Years

Today I have two VERY different New Year’s journal entries to share. I like them both quite a lot, but they have such different moods to them! The first page is the beginning of the book I made in Kelly Kilmer’s Kawaii Book class at Ink About It. I did the whole page on December 30, most of it in class but the journaling and a few details were added after I got home that evening. I love, love, LOVE this book and I can’t wait to do more in it. I want to finish the altered book I’ve been working in for the past several months first though. Not sure if I will, I may just end up with multiple books going at once. That’s kind of already the case anyhow, given that I have my Strategic Planner in the works. I need to share that soon too! :)
I had SO much fun making this book, and the page came together surprisingly easily. Kelly gave out a piece of tape that said “Happy New Year” to everyone in class, and the colors matched my background really nicely. I cut out the little man in his truck from one of many, many letfover game cards. (I added the rainbow star on the hubcap though – Lisa Frank stickers FTW!) I end up with bits and pieces of lots of different games from my Etsy listings. I have seriously HUNDREDS of random cards that I’m hoping to break into grabbags to put in my shop soon. The randomness of them is pretty cool, they make awesome journal fodder. I’m definitely keeping a few for myself, though! :)
Clicking on either photo will let you view them in closer detail.
As for the second New Year’s page, I found myself in a wicked bad funk as the clocks ticked over into 2010. [Oops! New England-ism alert! Wicked = very.] I was feeling overwhelmed by all the other journal artists out there, and found myself wondering why I was even bothering to try and share what I have to offer. I have to admit, this was partly prompted by the new issue of Art Journaling magazine I picked up at Barnes & Noble. It’s probably an unpopular opinion, but I have to say I was kind of disappointed with it. I mean, I didn’t dislike it exactly; there’s a lot of great stuff to look at and it was an enjoyable read, but I have to say I was sort of expecting more How To type articles. Ah well, to each her own. Anyhow, I was all cranky and, well, jaded and frustrated. So over the few hours around about the time 2009 turned into 2010, I put this together. It’s kind of ironic, but I really like how it came out! The background is brayered – many, many layers! It took quite a few tries to get the color combo I was going for to evoke both my mood and the windy, snowy weather outside that seemed to echo it. I added some star punchinella stencilling, which blurred a lot but it worked well that way. I stamped a cityscape with a stamp I picked up at Ink About It, but it’s a bit subtle. I scribbled sort of an aurora borealis emphasis with silver paint marker. At Christmas I got some snowflake stickers in my stocking, and they matched my color scheme quite well. I used a couple of those (yes, I’m on a sticker kick!) and drew in a bunch more with gel pen. The headline is rub on letters of various origins and the journaling is my good ole DecoColors.
Hope everyone is enjoying the New Year – I know January 3rd is a bit late for New Year journal pages but I’m a bit slow to blog without my own laptop – still! Hopefully this afternoon, we’ll have to see how the roads look. Stupid snow. At least it waited until after my workshops with Kelly! :D

Betsi, I love your journal pages, and the New Year’s pages are amazing! Gotta say . . . I’m inclined to agree with you. I sent my son out in frigid weather to raid Borders for the new issue of Art Journaling. Don’t know why, but I was disappointed with it on several levels – it’s almost like it wasn’t edgy enough (if that makes any sense). I’d like to see more how-to’s too and a little more artistic variety.
Thank you for your visit and your congrats – they mean the world to me. Hugs, Terri
Thanks so much for your compliments! ♥
I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one feeling a bit let down by Art Journaling! Yeah, it’s really hard to put a finger on what it is about this issue. I mean, I did like it (I certainly don’t want to offend any contributors should they read this) – there were lots of nice pictures to look at. But I felt like the written content was a bit repetitive, and often felt a little like they were “selling” art journaling. I don’t need a sales pitch, I want inspiration to stretch and try new things. You know what’s weird? I think my other big disappointment was a lack of ads! I know it’s probably because they are a new publication and only quarterly too, but I bet there are companies that would benefit from ads in AJ specifically (as opposed to other Stampington publications). Ma Vinci’s comes to mind, as they sell nothing but all kinds of nifty alphabet stamps.
I like both pages, particularly the colors in the first!
Thanks for your thoughts on the Art Journaling mag – my bookstores don’t carry it and I didn’t really want to order a copy totally blind. Isn’t it a relatively new publication? Hopefully they’ll get the hang of it!
Hi Mariza! I had thought I’d posted a reply to Terri’s comment with more thoughts on AJ, but I guess I’m still getting the hang of WordPress, it seems like maybe the reply only went to her. (Edited to add: Aha! My comment showed up in my spam queue! Weird. Hopefully it show up now, along with this one.)
Anyhow, yes, Art Journaling is a very new publication, this was issue 2. I never saw issue 1, as I only just heard about it and it sold out FAST. I do think they will probably improve as they get the hang of it. I liked it, but I just felt like it fell short of it’s potential. Funny thing is, one of the things I missed was the ads! Stores like Ma Vinci’s would do really well advertising in this, and I would love to see some ideas for places to shop, or workshops to take.
Great to meet another inspired journal artist! Have you done another page since your jaded page? sometimes the ‘stuff’ has to come up and out so you can move on.keep pushing through….enjoyed my visit to your blog.
I have another page started, but got blocked again – this time due to a minor disaster, I ended up kind of wrecking the jaded page… long story, one for another post in itself. :) Hopefully I’ll get moving soon, maybe tonight – I seem to be a late night journaler.
Ahhhhhhh *love* these pages.
I have felt the same way about every issue of that magazine and yet I’ve been buying every single issue. There are some good things about it, but it’s not AMAZING. Same thing with Artful Blogging and Where women Create. I buy them but am left feeling unsatisfied after reading them. I can’t quite put my finger on it for the AJ one but for the AB one, the written words of the articles are basically the same thing over and over again. I have hopes it will get better. I buy it as I love seeing journal pages and I also enjoy seeing the work of friends who’ve had work published in there.
